My students need Spanish resources such as books to read independently, books on CD, and large classroom activities to support their reading and language development.
Reading IS Fun!! But we really need some help! Please help us get the resources we need to make reading fun and enjoyable for our class!
I teach in a Kindergarten Dual-Immersion classroom in Wisconsin.
Our school has a high poverty rate and a high minority rate. This program is very new to the district. Half of my students are Native English Speakers and half are Native Spanish Speakers. We spend 90% of our day learning in Spanish, and 10% of our day in English. Each year, the students will be spending more of their time learning in English, until they reach 50% of their instruction in English and 50% in Spanish. My students are learning to be biliterate, bilingual, and bicultural.
My Project
My students need Spanish resources such as books to read independently, books on CD, and large classroom activities to support their reading and language development. These resources will help my students (both Native English Speakers and Native Spanish Speakers) learn how to read in Spanish. The Dual Immersion program is very new to the district, and Spanish resources and money are SO limited that we do not have very many books or reading supplies. As a Dual Immersion teacher, I spend a lot of my own money and time getting resources for my classroom to support their learning.
The Emergent Spanish Books will provide the students with small books that they can read independently. The Spanish book and CD set will give them books to listen to during literacy centers. The storytelling set with books and characters will allow us to read books as a whole group and act out what is going on to spark a deeper understanding and support their language development. Most importantly, all of these resources will help teach them that learning and reading are fun, which is the MOST important thing in kindergarten!
Parents choose to put their children in the Dual Immersion program because they want their children to be biliterate, bilingual, and bicultural.
They hope that their children will one day make a difference in the world, and they believe that this points their children in the right direction and provides them with the best foundation. Please help me in providing them the best Kindergarten experience and teaching them how to read in Spanish.
