Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a second grade teacher in a Title I school in a rural area. Almost half of our student population (as well as the population of my classroom) are English Language Learners. The students in my class are very motivated to succeed and love to learn. However, most of them only have access to learning tools and learning opportunities in the classroom.

Many of my students do not have the opportunity at home to have someone read to them fluently in the English Language, or even their native language. Reading is a fundamental part of their education and will enhance all of their other subject areas. Unfortunately, my school district does not have the electronic equipment I need to let the children listen to books read on tapes and CD's. I have acquired a wonderful library of books with accompanying CD's or audio cassettes, but I have no way to share these books with my students. As my students read along silently or whisper along with a book being read to them, they will learn the dynamics of the written language and become better readers themselves!

My classroom desperately needs several personal audio cassette players and CD players with headphones. These portable and small devises will allow my students to gain access to the wonderful literature library I have already acquired on audio! They can listen to the stories over and over and will eventually gain the necessary skills to be fluent readers. This is a proven strategy, especially for children learning a second language. MY ELL students and lower readers will benefit, as well as my higher and more enthusiastic readers. It is a wonderful way to show children the different ways to access books!

By supplying my class with the gift of personal audio and CD players that they can take to their seats or a comfortable place in the classroom, you are allowing my students to gain critical reading skills. Imagine having a child listen to a story several times on a tape or CD and then be able to read it to themselves, eventually feeling successful enough to share the story with classmates and their family! Imagine listening to a child read this story with expression and comprehension. It's the gift of literacy! Children LOVE listening to stories and this is another opportunity to enrich my students with literature and fluency modeling. This will be another tool to make reading FUN!
