Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with a very special group of students at a very special school. 72% of the students at my school at economically disadvantaged and 57% are English Language Learners. These students are faced with an abundance of adversities day in and day out that most of us will never face our entire lives.
I have students that are homeless and students that deal with incredible hardships.
Yet, they come to school every day with as much excitement and desire to learn as students at any other school. Their love for reading should be fed with rich complex literature to build both interest rich language development. They deserve to have access to high interest books that will peak their curiosity and love for learning each and every day.
My Project
A highly effective literacy classroom provides students with high interest and engaging texts! As a part of my literacy block I implement leveled guided reading groups, literature circles, which involve in depth student led discussions about their books, and independent reading centers, all of which need leveled collections of highly engaging leveled chapter books for my students to access and dive in to.
Many students do not have any books at home so this would also provide them with the opportunity to participate in weekly classroom book borrowing!
My students are very motivated readers and are so excited to begin!
