My school is a wonderful and unique place for learning. What makes this place so special are the kids that walk through our doors each day. I teach at a Title I low-income school in Kentucky. Many of my students come from challenging home lives. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Over 60% of our students are English Language Learners.
We have students from all over the world including Kenya, Cuba, Tanzania, Thailand, Vietnam, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, and the Congo. These students come with unique backgrounds and experiences to share, but they have to work twice as hard. My students learn English while becoming literate in their own language as well. Despite the many challenges my students face, they come to school excited to learn, so that one day they can lead a successful life.
I am so lucky to teach a curious group of third graders who love to get their hands on books. I want to continue to instill this love for reading in my students. For kids to become better readers, they need to read and read and read some more. This is why I would like to expand my students' classroom library with fiction and nonfiction books based on their interests. Topics in this collection include dogs, sports, math, animals, and even a story about loving yourself for who you are.
My students will read these books for enjoyment, to boost their reading stamina, and work on reading comprehension skills.
We will use these books as mentor texts to master many reading standards including comparing and contrasting, identifying the main idea of a text, and identifying character traits. There is nothing more inspiring than watching kids laugh and smile while reading a book. Thank you for taking an interest in this project and promoting a love for literature!
