Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title 1 school in Arizona and share my day with 23 kindergarteners with a real zest for life. Our district and school celebrate inclusion, so we have a mixed group of general education students and students in the Special Education program in our school family.
In our class, we believe learning is social, engaging, fun and never-ending.
We work hard every day. The work we put in each day helps us become fluent readers, problem solvers, critical thinkers, positive contributors and life-long friends.
I believe in creating a safe and positive for my students to experience learning. I understand that, for many of my students, being a part of our school family is the most consistent part of their lives. I love my classroom and my students - I look forward to watching my class grow throughout the year.
My Project
The students in my Title 1 kindergarten classroom come to me with more school-dependent needs. School-dependent students come to me with fewer pre-school, social and emotional skills. It is my job to fill all the gaps while sparking an interest in learning. The materials and supplies requested will directly enrich their reading fluency and word building skills. If I can build fluency and confidence within my students early phonics and phonic awareness skills, we can spend more time diving into comprehension and critical thinking.
Often times, students are drawn to an activity that engages their curiosity, is challenge appropriate and builds confidence in their own abilities.
We will use the word builders, do-a-dotters, letter building kits and flashlights to ignite their interest in reading. The people-colored crayons will help the students build connections in their writing. If I can get these early learners to find a comfortable place to take risks with learning now, I will be setting the stage for deeper thinking for the rest of their lives.
