Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a phenomenal group of Special Education students ranging from TK-5 school in Southern California. Our students come from low socio-economic background but we make the most of what we have. Our school is majority Hispanic with a very large population of English language learners. Every student enrolled at our school receives free breakfast and lunch daily. Even with all the challenges presented to these students each day, when they enter the classroom they are ready and willing to learn. My students are learning the importance of school and value of education!
My Project
The special education students that I support do not have a lot of access to appropriately leveled books. Some of them have no access to books at all. The students at my school site are almost all living in poverty and I want to create a library system where they can check out books from my room, which will always be level and age appropriate.
It saddens me that some kids do not have the same access to books and opportunities as others, just because of the house they were born into.
I strive to create an atmosphere of hard work and growth, but also spend countless hours on social/emotional understanding. I want my students to leave for middle school ready to learn and also able to discuss how they feel and solve issues without resorting to violence or frustration/anger.
