My English language learners (ELLs) come from a city that a local newspaper article once reported as having "the poorest children in New York and the most intense metro segregation in the state." It also reported that our district is probably the worst school district in the state, mainly based on reported test scores. My refugee and immigrants students are learning how to communicate with each other and speak the English language while learning other subjects like science and math.
They are new to the country and start out shy and they are not confident in their English skills.
Those statements, however, are not representative of the motivation and ability that my students have. I primarily work with refugee and immigrant students with disabilities who are working toward graduating high school with a high school Regents Diploma.
The goal is that every student will leave high school with some college credits. Many students begin taking college-level courses.
Reading comprehension occurs when words on a page are not just mere words but thoughts and ideas. This is a very important skill for my English language learners (ELLs) to become successful in their classes, work, and life in general. Coming to the US as refugees and immigrants, my students had a difficult time transitioning to the US content area classes full of specific vocabulary that made them frustrate easily. Having a reading program in their Chromebooks will help English learners easily access it, listen to the pronunciation, and work on reading comprehension. My students are highly motivated scholars who show perseverance and strive every day.
With this reading program, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level.
