This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Some of my students don't believe they have what it takes. This year, my goal is to change their mindset. I want all of my students to be confident. I want my kids to know that they are writers, readers, creators, scientists, mathematicians and engineers. I want my students receiving special services to believe in their futures.

My students live in the desert and many have never traveled beyond "the sand curtain." They are inquisitive and fun loving.

Many of my students receive Special Education services for things like Autism, Asperger's, ADD and ADHD. They are passionate to know how things work and why phenomena happen. I hope that many will be the first in their families to go to college someday, or the first in their family who studies science or uses their reading and writing at the collegiate level.

My Project

My goals for this year have been to update our classroom library in order to help our kids fall in love with reading. In our classroom, we focus on choice reading- giving kids the choice of what they read as long as they don't find it too easy or too difficult to understand. We know that by middle school many kids no longer enjoy the act of reading and often tone of the biggest reasons why is because they have no freedom in what they read. We are going to change that!

By bringing engaging, relevant graphic novels into our classroom, we are going to hook more kids into books they will enjoy and hopefully ignite their love of reading.
