Reading Interests Bloom With Expanded Nonfiction Library
The cost of this proposal for a fifth-grade leveled library nonfiction reading collection from Lakeshore Learning that will introduce students to topics as various as pioneer life in the American West to characteristics of galaxies, and a write-and-wipe board to help focus on vocabulary building is $205, including shipping and fulfillment.
I teach fifth grade at a wonderful Brooklyn school. A large percentage of our student population is Asian. Eighty-nine percent of our students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. My students are eager learners, and I have found that they are really interested in history and related nonfiction subjects. As young people and young readers, however, they do not yet have a lot of background in nonfiction and history. I would like to help them expand their horizons and begin developing interests in these subjects. Unfortunately, my classroom nonfiction library is what my students call "boring." To help them I am asking for funding to purchase a wonderful leveled library from Lakeshore Learning. I am also asking for funding to purchase a write-and-wipe board to be used for guided reading and vocabulary building lessons.
The nonfictin library has ten books. These books are leveled so they will be suitable for a range of reading abilities, and they cover topics as various as pioneer life in the American West to what we currently know about galaxies. These books are written to target standards in areas such as determining cause and effect, comparing and contrasting information and separating fact from opinion. I know my students would be drawn in by the new and exciting worlds these books would help them explore.
The write-and-wipe board is a super-versatile board that features a big, write-and-wipe surface with plenty of room for writing new vocabulary words and using them in sample sentences. It can be used freestanding, propped on a desk, or hung on a wall, and I know it would help me focus attention on reading and comprehension particulars.
Your help is very much appreciated. Thank You.
