Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my Spanish for Heritage Speakers class come from families that speak Spanish. However, most of them have not had access to formal education in the language. Based on research and my own experience in the classroom, reading is the most powerful tool to develop vocabulary and fluency in a language. Since we are back to school online, I would like my students to have readily available access to reading materials in Spanish that are age appropriate and engaging.
My goal is for my students to develop a life-long love for reading, which will subsequently foster their literacy skills as well as strengthen their biliteracy and appreciation for their native or inherited culture.
My Project
The Scholastics magazines in Spanish will allow me to provide my students with additional reading material while we are distance learning. The articles cover a wide variety of topics that teenagers find highly engaging and accesible.
The magazines will help me to differentiate instruction for all my students.
By having access to articles written at varied reading levels, my students will be able to feel successful and embrace reading for pleasure. In addition, the articles showcase different parts of the Spanish-speaking world, which will allow my students to learn about themselves, their roots, as well as about other cultures.
