I have the nicest students you will ever meet. They are creative, athletic, and always willing to help. Our small, rural school houses students from preschool through twelfth grade. As the Librarian and Spanish teacher, I have the pleasure of teaching our students all thirteen years they attend school.
Inspiring our students to have a lifelong love of reading is very important to me.
Many of our students elect to take Spanish in high school; however, they do not have access to Spanish Language literature that will improve not only their Spanish skills but also foster the love of reading.
My Project
Experiencing language in context through stories, newspaper articles, or songs is the best way to learn a language. Students need a variety of engaging reading materials written at a level they can comprehend to promote understanding and communication in Spanish.
The number one motivator in getting students to read is choice.
Students that are able to choose books and reading materials that interest them are far more likely to read for enjoyment. Independent reading for enjoyment builds word recognition, fluency, and confidence in grammatical structures. By providing my students with time and materials to read independently, they will gain confidence and an appreciation for being able to read in a second language.
