Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever tried to read on cold, hard tile? That is where my students currently read due to the lack of comfortable areas in our classroom.
Our school is a low income school with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch.
Many of these students are English Language Learners. A majority of my students do not have access to books at home. They do not have a strong support system at home that will promote good reading habits. It is my job to build a love of reading while I see them for 8 hours a day in first grade.
My Project
My students need 7 bean bag chairs to sit on while reading. With these new bean bag chairs, students will be able to find a spot in the room and read comfortably. If they have a comfortable place to read, their reading stamina is likely to increase. Instead of seeing reading as something boring, they will begin to see it as enjoyable in their new chairs.
I know that if I were forced to read at a desk or on the cold hard tile, I wouldn't enjoy it.
If my students can experience the feeling of snuggling up to a good book, they will be more likely to do this outside of the classroom. Your donation will help produce lifelong readers from a first grade classroom in Central Washington.
