My students are struggling readers in a small, rural community. About 50 percent of the children in our school are from low-income families. I teach over 50 students each day in our reading intervention program. Students at our school are taught phonics skills in a systematic, explicit way. With our reading instruction, we are trying to give the students practice with words they can access on their own, using the phonics and high-frequency word knowledge they have already acquired. Our school is working to build up our collection of decodable books which our early readers will be able to read at school in small groups, as well as at home with their families.
Giving our students colorful, engaging books will make reading more enjoyable for them and will give them the motivation to practice the skills they need to become successful readers.
The children will be able to build their reading confidence with these books and will be able to work toward mastery of the phonics skills they are learning.
