Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you recall how excited you were when you first started to read for pleasure? The moment when words painted a picture in your mind? But, what if pages were missing from your book? Or, the story was too old and and you could not relate to the characters or setting? Still reading for enjoyment?
My 3rd graders have come to the point where they are no longer learning to read, they are reading for pleasure.
Our school has implemented a schoolwide incentive program, based on Accelerated Reader quizzes,to motivate students to read more. My students are excited about the prospect of moving through the various levels, but do not have a sufficient amount of titles available to them so that they may realize their goal. I have great students, with hard working parents, in a low socio-economic area. Most of my students walk to school and are on free or reduced lunch. Regardless of the difficulties that life may throw at my students, they come to school happy and eager to learn.
My Project
My school is located in a low socio-economic area. As budget cuts continue to take away from our students, and the sluggish economy continues to take away from their parents, it becomes increasingly more challenging to keep students focused on their education and motivated to keep moving forward. Students are forced to live in multiple family residences and the constant thought of having to relocate to where the work is. Most of the parents have to work multiple, low-paying jobs to provide for their families, which keeps them out until late at night. Transportation is limited which prevents students from accessing the local library. I am requesting books for our class library which will introduce my girls to Fancy Nancy and my boys to Big Nate. High-interest series like these will keep my students both interested and challenged. The authors I have selected take students to places they have never been before and allow them to experience life through a different lense.
This donation will not only grow readers, but it will inspire writers.
You never know; this project may just produce a future Newberry Award Winning author! Thank you for supporting my current and future students.
