Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Coming into first grade, so many students told me that they did not enjoy reading. It was boring and too hard. One of my goals for this year was to instill a love of reading in my students. With a good book in hand, I knew that they would fall in love with the opportunities books gave them. This year, my class has had the chance to check out books from our classroom library.

Working at a low-income school, we do not have a library for the students, so it became my mission to provide one for them.

Our class is composed entirely of Latino and black students. I want to provide them with outstanding literature that highlights their culture and teaches them that they can be whoever they want to be.

My Project

This year my scholars have worked really hard on their reading. Many of my students came in below grade level and had a lot of work to do to catch up. My scholars have put in the work, reading with me every day in guided reading and taking books home to practice with their families.

First graders should be reading at a level G during this time, and I am proud to say that 78% of my scholars are on or above grade level!

With this amazing work comes the opportunity for scholars to continue their journey with books, and we are in need for some level G and H books to help them with their learning journey.
