My Students

My 7th and 8th-grade classes are full of unique personalities. Creative, intelligent, funny, dramatic, active, sensitive, caring and mysterious, are but a few words that describe my students. My students explore mathematics and English Language Arts together in an alternative setting. They are becoming confident learners and are building life-long skills for their "now" as well as their futures. Together, we actively work on mathematics labs and ELA projects along with social and emotional lessons for life's interactions. We are a room of mathematicians, authors, scientists, poets, historians, teachers, and learners!

My Project

In English Language Arts classes we often read fictional stories about people facing adversity or self-discovery, but students don't always seem to relate to the assigned novels and often do not have a choice in books read in their classes. Both books, Money Hungry and The Skin I’m In, are very relatable and have been chosen by the students themselves.

These books show students that self-growth and self-love are possible, but not always easy.

Many of my students know someone who is dealing with drug addiction, hunger, and homelessness and know the impact these situations can have on families. In addition, my students face many challenges and authentic adolescent fears of social acceptance and peer intimidation and are working to grow through these challenges. Please allow my students to take a deeper dive into these authentic stories of making change, self-growth, and developing self-love while challenging themselves to think beyond their current situations along with helping to develop and deepen their enjoyment of reading.
