My students need literature that connects them to the real world. Having individual magazines that cover what's going on in the world today, makes reading more enjoyable. Plus, Scholastic provides digital learning opportunities and extension activities.
My students are exceptional learners with a variety of disabilities. They work hard to grasp concepts and make connections to real-world applications. Although instruction delivery is varied as much as possible, I am limited with the resources I currently have available. Scholastic magazines will provide my students with their own copy of the latest edition. The magazines are full of articles on current events and high interest news stories. In addition, students are given an opportunity to take a side in a hot-topic debate, participate in Reader's Theaters, and access today's headlines in a friendly format. The pictures are breathtaking, the online connections are great and include video clips, vocabulary review, and reader input. Content covered meets standards and provides opportunities for modifications and extension activities.
With your help, I will be able to provide my students quality, leveled instruction, with connections to current events and real-world news in a fun and approachable format; while meeting standards and becoming better readers and writers.
My Project
Scholastic ACTION magazine and The New York Times UPFRONT are high-interest, current event magazines that allow students to make real-world connections and experiences from the classroom. Scholastic provides online resources, video clips, leveled supplemental activities, and fantastic photographs, while tying every article and topic into our English/Language Arts standards.
By providing each student with his/her own copy, they can highlight key text, make notes in the margins, and answer comprehension questions/survey responses right in the magazine.
That means everything they need is right at their fingertips. In addition, all students will have an online access code that can be used to look at a digital copy, participate in the debate with other users around the globe, and access related video clips and text-to-speech options.
