Reading for Identity

Help me give my students reading experiences that align with their personal identities. Books by diverse authors about diverse people, such as March by John Lewis allow students to see themselves represented positively in the world.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a Title I urban district where 75% of the people are considered low income. The students are working hard against disadvantages they've had since birth. My students are primarily Latinx and African American. Most speak two languages.

These students are very curious about the world beyond and they are very passionate about current events and how they fit into the wider world.

They want to be active and informed citizens that work to make a difference in their community and world.

My Project

Since the school year is so uncertain in these times, students need to have access to compelling books by diverse authors that highlight diverse experiences. These books, all by authors or color, will help students identify themselves within the broader world around them and provide experiences to see artists of color.

Since so much of next year will be done independently by students, independent reading books that connect to their identities and our class topics will be essential for keeping the learning going at home.

I am excited to offer such a broad range of books for students to engage with so we can get them reading more as more and more of our students are coming in as non-readers. We can help change their passion for reading by providing relatable stories written by and featuring people they can identify with.
