My students need certificates, shades, bead necklaces, mini note pads, drawstring backpacks, medals, bookmarks, stickers, pencils, and rubber bracelets to celebrate their reading milestones!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are African American and Hispanic students who live in a high poverty neighborhood in Texas. The neighborhood is also drug and crime infested. Our school is a Title I school with more than ninety per cent of students on free lunch. Our school was just rated academically unacceptable by the state. Many of their parents do not have a high school education or speak English. Every year, reading is the area where they score the lowest on the state test. Some of our students have to ride at least thirty minutes to our school because the schools in their district were shut down. Many of their parents do not have transportation to pick them up from tutoring so we have to maximize our instructional time. Many of our students are neglected, have emotional problems, or are being taken care of by their grandparents. Teachers get little parent support. These students require a lot of love, patience, and attention.
My Project
These materials will make a difference in my students lives by motivating them to read and making reading fun. We all know the importance of reading and why students should practice everyday. There are some students who will read independently everyday, and there are some students who will need an extra push. These items will serve as the push students need to reach their goal.
The items funded by this project will serve as reading incentives for students who have improved their reading, or are reading at their targeted goal.
These items will also be given out at various themed reading parties throughout the year to celebrate students who completed their reading logs. I also would like to highlight a student every month,in every class, who is making strides in reading. They will be called the Star Readers of the Month. These students will have their picture placed on the bulletin board and receive a drawstring backpack along with other goodies to celebrate their accomplishment.
For students in this neighborhood, learning to read is either life or death. If they learn how to read, they will have more positive opportunities available to them. If they do not learn how to read, it will have a negative impact on their lives. These incentives will help push my students in the right direction
