Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a very low-income school, I see that my students are faced with many challenges that occur in and out of school. When students come to our school, they feel a comfort, safety, and stability that they may not have at home. The students I teach love to receive positive praise and attention. I want to be able to provide my students with a safe, positive, and meaningful academic environment.

Ninety-seven percent of my students receive free and reduced-price lunch. Most students come from immigrant families and live in a low socioeconomic community. These factors may have a huge impact on the students' academic success as well as being exposed to experiences which build background knowledge.

When students enter my classroom, I believe it is important to focus on the growth and potential that each student has. I try to instill in my students that everyone can be a leader no matter what background you have or where you have come from.

My Project

I am asking for 25 copies of Lois Lowry's The Giver, 25 copies of A Wrinkle in Time and 20 copies of Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe: A Celebration of the First Edition (Chronicles of Narnia). I am requesting these books for my students so that we will be able to have a class set of chapter books to read as a class throughout the school year. These class sets of texts will help the reading process run smoothly from day to day.

By implementing these texts, my students will begin to see themselves in the literary characters and will engage in what for some may be an initial exposure to dystopian literature.

We will use these materials daily to aide us in the process of becoming life-long readers. I truly need your support to make this a reality.

The donations to this project will help to improve my students' understanding of and competency in reading comprehension and literary analysis through discussion and authentic writing.
