My students need a carpet, soft seats and more, for a comfortable, quiet space for reading, working in small groups, with a partner, and/or independently.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
You know that feeling of reading a book and not wanting to put it down because it's such a page turner? If only my students had a comfortable and cozy space in the classroom, they too would be able to experience that while getting lost in a book.
Many of the students are at school for up to ten hours a day.
Please help me create an inviting library area for my students to get hooked on books during Independent Reading Time! My second graders enjoy listening and sharing stories from all types of genres, but more importantly, they also need time to practice reading independently from a variety of genres during this uninterrupted time.
My second graders come from low-social economic backgrounds. Most speak English as their second language, and many do not have the resources or space for building home libraries. The reading corner will provide an environment that nurture literacy and foster independence.
My Project
My classroom library needs a library rug, seat cushions, and comfy bean bag chairs. The materials will enable me to create a quiet and comfortable environment that will foster literacy. Students will able to spend time reading uninterrupted at their classroom library. During this time, students are applying their reading strategies. Not only are they actively reading their books of choice independently and at their level of comfort, they also need to response to the texts via book report forms or response in writing letters to classmates. Having a comfortable, inviting, and quiet corner in the classroom will help inspire a lifelong love of books and also produce critical and literate citizens of the 21st century.
Go back to that feeling of reading and good book.
How great would it be for every child to have that feeling and to grow up with the love of reading. Your help with setting up a cozy reading nook would ensure this. A welcoming rug, comfortable cushions that can be moved to any area the student feels most comfortable, and bean bag chairs will create the necessary environment for the students to embrace books and reading.
