I work with struggling readers in kindergarten through 2nd grade. Research has shown the importance of early intervention with students that are failing to learn to read. Research also shows that if students don't read proficiently by 3rd grade, odds are that they will not catch up to their peers.
Many of the students at my school function at a very high academic level, so students who struggle really stand out in the regular classroom.
This can result in anxiety, poor self-esteem, low self-confidence, and other social and emotional problems.
My Project
This intervention kit will support my struggling readers and writers in K-2 as we complete our school year in the world of virtual learning. I wasn't able to send books home with my kids to keep them reading, writing, and growing while learning at home. We have continued to teach and learn together as best we can using Zoom and Google Meets.
Struggling readers, who are already behind their peers, will suffer the most from the loss of direct instruction brought about by the current pandemic.
This will help put books in their hands and quality instructional tools in mine, so that I can provide the best virtual teaching that I can. Reading gives us a place to go when we have to stay where we are. These amazing tools will continue to support my intervention students after the pandemic, when we return to learning together at school. It would be a gift that keeps on giving and would benefit students for year to come. With the possibility of returning to virtual learning in the fall, this would be an invaluable tool as we continue to teach and learn remotely.
