The new counseling resources, including therapy guides and books, have provided invaluable tools for our students to navigate emotional challenges. We've introduced lessons on coping mechanisms, stress management, and healthy communication, skills that extend far beyond the classroom. These resources have facilitated open discussions about mental health, fostering a safe space for students to express their feelings and learn to support one another.\r\n\r\nIn our classrooms, reading these resources isn't just about absorbing information; it's about active engagement and self-reflection. We use the guides and books to initiate group discussions, role-play scenarios, and encourage students to journal their thoughts. This interactive approach helps them personalize the lessons and apply them to their own lives. We've seen a noticeable shift in student behavior, with increased empathy and improved conflict resolution skills.\r\n\r\nSeveral students, particularly those who previously struggled with anxiety or social isolation, have shown remarkable progress. For example, one student, who was often withdrawn, has started participating actively in group discussions, sharing their experiences and offering support to their peers. Another student, who used to have frequent outbursts, has learned to use mindfulness techniques from the guides to regulate their emotions. The ability to give these students the tools they need to succeed has been a direct result of your kindness. The kids were super excited and wanted to know all about where it came from. I also have a music class in my room before school, and even they commented on it! The music teacher noticed what was new, but the music kids didn't know what it was until their teacher told them. But they use the board as well, so they were all pretty happy too. My kids are all pleased to know that we can now write on this new white board with color (I can't get color off the old one without using rubbing alcohol and WD-40), and not just the black markers (which barely came off my old board, and after a few weeks I still had to use rubbing alcohol and WD40 to get rid of all the ghosting). I am not getting rid of my old one, since the thought of putting that huge thing into a landfill makes me so sad. But we'll be using the old one more to hang up charts and maps, and we'll be using the new one more to show our thinking (in full color). This is the only whole group text we will be doing all year and the kids are beyond excited. Normally we use our curriculum readers where they only read short stories. \r\n\r\nUsing this book, students will read the chapter at home answering some questions in order to contribute to the conversation with their whole class or small group the next day. Some skills we will be analyzing are character traits, vocabulary, especially figurative language, comparing characters' actions, feelings, and dialogue, along with themes. At the end of each chapter I have picked a mentor sentence to discuss while we examine why the author chose to write it a specific way: simple, compound, complex, thinking or dialogue. Today we even noticed irony in the first sentence of the book, \"Eleven-year old Virgil Salinas already regretted the rest of middle school, and he'd only just finished sixth grade.\" We discussed how you can regret something before it even happens, which is irony.\r\n\r\nThe class was so excited today that there was a buzz in the room. Many times many students were talking at once. I finally had to put them in groups, so they could all share their thinking about the chapter. \r\n\r\nThis book is highly engaging with excellent cliffhangers. Kids are eager to read at home in order to figure out the secrets each of the children in our literature portrays. One of the characters is also deaf just like one of the children in my classroom. Today she wanted to talk about her hearing loss and how this affects her. Some of the students wrote down that the characters hearing loss was a problem in the story and my student disagreed, which many students thought was interesting and showed my student felt safe in the classroom to share. \r\n\r\nThis was only day, so I can't wait for the authentic conversations to come next.","fullyFundedDate":1733610783812,"projectUrl":"project/class-book-club/8635693/","projectTitle":"Class Book Club","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Wiegman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9227171_orig.jpg?crop=552,552,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1723563000909","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9227171"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_68466","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":762,"numTeachers":41,"percentFrplEligible":11,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":76,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":9,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"18.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":84.6,"schoolId":68466,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Slavens ECE - 8 School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Slavens ECE - 8 School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/colorado/denver-public-school-district-1/slavens-elementary-school/68466"}
