Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“There is no friend as loyal as a book.” This is one of my favorite quotes about books, from Ernest Hemingway. It is a quote that I share with my students each year. They need to know that no matter what life hands to them, books will never fail them.
A large percentage of our students are part of the free and reduced lunch program.
We also have a large population of English language learners at our school. These are some of the greatest kids I have ever worked with, and they have such an incredible love for reading. For many students books are an escape from the problems they may face at home, or at school. For others, the reluctant readers, they often need an incentive to encourage them to read. For either group of students, our Reading Counts! program has proved to be a savior in encouraging readers—whether reluctant or enthusiastic.
My Project
The Reading Counts! program, provided by Scholastic, has been in use at my school since I began teaching here 10 years ago. I have seen even the most unwilling students breeze through a large book, just for the sheer joy of taking a quiz with this program. This program tracks quizzes based on books students are reading, books of all shapes and sizes. It assigns point values, tracks word count read, and shows students’ averages on quizzes. Teachers use this tool to help track comprehension and reading level. Students use it to track their own comprehension, as well as the points they are receiving. Our school rewards kids based on the points they accumulate. There are four different tiers of prizes available, which is determined based on their grade level. Teachers even create their own incentives in the classroom, based on quiz averages, and words read.
Students look forward to using this program, and seeing the rewards they receive, based on the progress they have made.
Donating to this project will not help just one classroom, but it will help all of the students at our school. I am requesting a renewal subscription for our students to Reading Counts! I have had parents commend me for encouraging their kids to read. I can’t take all of the credit for it, though. This program has sparked the interest of many students. It gives them a sense of pride when they pass a quiz, and see how many points and words they are able to collect. So much can be said for the Reading Counts! program, and why it is an important piece of our school.
