The sensory materials that have been purchased and used throughout our campus have had a profound impact on our students. In our educational setting, sensory materials are a fundamental tool for fostering learning, regulation, and engagement for all students, particularly those students with diverse learning needs.\r\n\r\nSensory materials serve a critical role in creating a more inclusive and effective learning environment. They provide a safe and acceptable outlet for students to manage sensory input, which can be overwhelming in a typical classroom. Since utilizing these tools, we have noticed that many of our students have improved focus and attention, increased participation, and reduced anxiety and stress. \r\n\r\nTeachers have also shared the positive growth that our students have experienced since having access to these items. The sensory tools that we have received are directly contributing to our students' academic and social-emotional growth. While these items were a small investment, they will restult in significant returns in student well-being and achievement. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for your support and generosity with supporting our school and students. What started as a cup of caterpillars became a living classroom where science, curiosity, and wonder took flight—literally!\r\n\r\nThe butterflies transformed our lessons in powerful ways. Instead of just reading about life cycles, pollination, and ecosystems, students were able to watch these processes unfold before their eyes. Caterpillars thrived on the food in their cups, then chrysalises hung quietly on the lids, and—our favorite moment—bright butterflies emerged and took their first flight. Every stage of the life cycle became a story the students could witness and retell.\r\n\r\nBeyond science, the butterfly garden has sparked a sense of responsibility and care.\r\nMost importantly, the butterfly garden has shown our students that their efforts matter. They see how planting flowers and creating safe spaces can help living things thrive. That lesson in stewardship and hope is one they will carry far beyond the walls of our classroom.\r\n\r\nThank you for making this possible. This simple yet powerful manipulative has proven to be instrumental in developing a deeper, more intuitive understanding of fractions.\r\n\r\nBefore incorporating fraction strips, I observed that many students struggled with the abstract nature of fractions. They could follow rules for operations, but often lacked a conceptual grasp of what fractions represent. This led to difficulties when applying fraction concepts to problem-solving.\r\n\r\nThe introduction of fraction strips transformed this. By providing a visual and tactile representation, fraction strips allowed students to:\r\nVisualize Fraction Magnitude: Students could easily compare the sizes of different fractions, such as 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4, by physically lining up the strips. This eliminated the common misconception that a larger denominator always means a larger fraction.\r\n\r\nUnderstand Equivalence: Through hands-on manipulation, students discovered that different fractions could represent the same amount (e.g., 2/4 = 1/2). This concrete experience made the concept of equivalent fractions much clearer than simply memorizing rules.\r\n\r\nPerform Operations with Understanding: Adding and subtracting fractions became a process of combining or removing strips, rather than just manipulating numerators and denominators. This visual approach helped students understand why we need common denominators.\r\n\r\nConnect to the Whole: Fraction strips reinforced the idea that fractions are parts of a whole, helping students to avoid the common error of treating them as separate whole numbers.\r\n\r\nThe results have been remarkable. Students demonstrate greater confidence when working with fractions, and their ability to apply fraction concepts to real-world problems has improved significantly. They are also more engaged and enthusiastic during math lessons, actively using the fraction strips to explore and discover fraction relationships.\r\n\r\nIn conclusion, fraction strips have been an invaluable tool in fostering a deeper understanding of fractions among my 4th and 5th-grade students. I highly recommend their use to any educator seeking to enhance their students' conceptual understanding of this essential mathematical topic.","fullyFundedDate":1739373226050,"projectUrl":"project/fractions-for-understanding/9039357/","projectTitle":"Fractions for Understanding","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Katingima","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8231680"},{"teacherId":9889652,"projectId":9040159,"letterContent":"Thanks to your support, The Bridge Home has brought a new level of engagement and learning to our 4th-grade classroom at Saguaro Elementary! 📚✨ This book has allowed us to dive deep into essential reading and writing skills while fostering empathy and critical thinking.\r\n\r\nIn our small group ELA instruction, students are developing skills such as making inferences, identifying themes, and citing text evidence. During our writing block at 11 AM, they are working on a structured four-paragraph essay, practicing organization, analysis, and supporting their ideas with details from the text. This process is helping them grow as thoughtful readers and confident writers.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom has become more interactive and discussion-based. Students eagerly share their thoughts, make connections, and engage in meaningful conversations about the challenges and perseverance of the characters.
