Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have just completed my 3rd year as a fifth grade teacher at P S 345 in East New York. I am very excited about my students and the school environment.
Most of the students at PS 345 qualify for free lunch, and are in need of special services in order to remediate unprecedented learning deficits. In spite of the obstacles they face, my students are eager to learn when they come to school. Due to the new standardized test created by the state my students must demonstrate reading comprehension and writing skills on this test in order to pass the grade, which will allow them move to the next grade.
I have researched the Scholastic Reading Skills Kit and I believe it will assist my students due to the high interest reading selection with skill-based activities that will enable students to work independently while building necessary skills. The passages and activities range in difficulty, offering remediation for students currently below grade level and continues to challenge them as they are building confidence in order to grow.
The activities allow students the opportunity to practice strategies for skills tested on the state exam including: finding the main idea, drawing conclusions and making inferences, using context clues, and restating facts and details. My students will move at their own pace due to the independence the student will have using this resource.
I have been using Reading Counts from Scholastic for three years and I am happy with that program. I am sure this will be of good use to the students I will have in the future. I appreciate your help in developing the reading skills necessary for the state exams and throughout their educational journey by sponsoring the purchase of Scholastic Reading Skills Kit Box C (grade 4 to mid 6 grade level).
