Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Did you ever finish reading a book expecting more? Or wonder what would have happened if...? These are feelings my students are familiar with after reading books and magazines!
Though my students come from all walks of life, one of the many things they have in common is their love of reading.
As eighth graders, my students are in the phase between being a kid and being a young adult. It's not unusual to find a student reading a magazine or a Tolkien novel in the same class period. Thus, they usually find solace in reading materials that are relevant and applicable to their lives.
My Project
In our school, students are not allowed to bring their backpacks to class; they are to leave it in their lockers. That said, students can only carry so much. By getting these classroom books, students will be able to read books and magazines without having to worry if they left it at home or in their locker, thus being marked down for being "unprepared".
Additionally, these books will also give students the opportunity to broaden their horizons by reading materials pertaining to contemporary society and relevant themes.
I say this because students frequently tell me that what's available to them is "boring" or "irrelevant". That said, since our society is ever evolving, its fair to keep up with the times.
