Reading Beyond Our Years

Help me give my students a classroom library that will take them on adventures beyond their wildest dreams.

My Students

Being identified as a high ability student doesn't mean that school is easy. Even these students come to school with a wide range of past experiences, interests, and abilities. Some have traveled the world while others were not exposed to books until kindergarten. Despite their different backgrounds, my 24 third and fourth graders still share one common trait - extraordinary potential.

Inquisitive, imaginative, and eager are three words that describe my students best!

From famous inventors to dragons, sports to World War II, my students want to know more about everything. This year I have challenged my students to each read 40 books from a variety of genres. This challenge has turned into a race, and my students are leaving me in the dust! My goal this year to embrace their enthusiasm and keep their momentum going so they can reach new heights in learning.

My Project

High Ability students generally read well above their same-age peers. While this is essential to exposing them to higher level content in the varying subject areas, it can become an issue when selecting independent reading material. Many of my third and fourth grade students are reading at an eighth grade level or higher. As the difficulty level of a text increases, so does the content. No one wants 9-year-old children to be reading content they are not emotionally prepared to handle.

With these books, I will be able to provide my students with an age-appropriate library that will challenge and enrich their young minds.

My 24 students personally requested many of the titles and authors included in this list of books. This means that we will be eager and excited to have them in our classroom and in our hands. We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to expand our world and read beyond our years.
