My Students

Reading between the lines can be difficult for my students. However, reading a wordless picture book forces student to dig deep and determine the author's purpose and message. Wordless picture books engage readers and build comprehension.

My students are racially diverse.

They attend a low SES school. The school is an urban school that services approximately 2,000 students. The school is a college preparatory magnet school. Teachers strive to prepare all students for college. The students are eager to learn and willing to take on challenges. My students desire to achieve academically and have dreams of attending college.

My Project

These books require students to be actively involved with the learning. The students are instantly intrigued by the books because there are no words, only pictures. The pictures are intense and very detailed. They require that the students apply critical thinking skills along with higher level thinking skills. Students have to infer and activate previous knowledge. Students have to connect with the characters and events in order to derive meaning from the pictures. Students have to use all the skills that are required of good readers. Students will find themselves turning back the pages and re-reading the pictures. These books will challenge my students, increase their comprehension, and make them overall better readers.

A donation to this project will impact more than just the students in my classroom.

I will be able to share these books with other teachers. These books will be able to be used for many years, thus challenging new students year after year. Students will learn to think outside of the box and will view reading in a whole new light.
