Our class includes an energetic group of third graders, who are hardworking, engaged, and rock star learners! They each uniquely contribute to our classroom and school community in such positive ways. The students come from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds, a majority are considered low-income, have Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) as well as a high percentage of English Language Learners.
Our school and district culture places a huge emphasis on teaching to the whole child, meeting students' needs in all areas, so that they can be socially, emotionally, behaviorally, and academically prepared for anything they can dream of for their future lives.
The one thing that excites each of them and puts them on an even playing field is access to great mentor texts. Our students are eager to learn and love to read aloud where they can relate to the characters or characters who represent them.
My Project
The pandemic has been quite difficult for my students from remote learning to hybrid and now to in-person.
My students are struggling with their basic phonic skills.
In this project, I am asking for Teachers Pay Teachers gift cards to purchase supplementary supports to help my students with phonics. One resource I would like to purchase is Phonics for Reading Three Level Bundle in a PowerPoint with Animation. This resource is evidence based and is super engaging. In addition, I am asking for graphic novels to keep my students interested in reading. It is hard for students to like reading when they struggle to decode words. My students have been asking for these novels.
