My Students

My high school students are enthusiastic and motivated to learn Spanish. They come from diverse backgrounds and share different perspectives in the Spanish language classroom.

I am amazed by my students!

I am looking for ways to engage them. They need compelling lessons in order to shape them into lifetime learners and give them a love and understanding of other cultures.

My Project

Reading is a key component to second language acquisition. In my intermediate Spanish classroom we spend a lot of time reading, both as a class and individually.

I would love to be able to have more books that celebrate diverse racial identities and allow my students to see themselves reflected in the characters.

Many of my students are Hispanic heritage speakers. These novels, in which all the protagonists are Hispanic, would allow students to explore their background, break down barriers, and explore their history. I hope that this will provide all my students with examples of strong role models of people of color, and help to break down stereotypes and racism.

In class, different groups of students will choose a different novel to read as part of a literature circle. At the end they will report out as a culminating project.
