I teach at a Title I school where some of my students do not have access to computers on a daily basis at their houses. My students come from many different types of backgrounds. Some of them live with both of their parents, their grandparents, or some other relative who has been appointed to raise them. Sometimes it is hard to imagine everything that they face once they go home. My classroom is hopefully a safe haven for many of them where they can forget what they are dealing with and learn more about the history of our world.
I believe I can add to their learning experience by using creative hands-on learning as well as showing them what else is out there in the world.
We have to show them that their past doesn't dictate where they go in life. They have a blank portrait and it is up to them to create their masterpiece.
My job is show them that they can be whatever they dream for themselves and help guide them to complete their goals. In order to do that, I have to give them the tools to be successful.
My Project
The two sets of novels that I have chosen to add to my classroom will allow my students to learn about history through historical fiction novels. As we read novels in my class, I try to add some historical concepts so that they can make connections to real-world situations. Reading like a historian will allow students to feel as they are understanding more of the time period that they are reading about.
Learning about history through historical text will enlighten students to the era that they are learning about in class.
Students will be able to connect from the past to the novel by accessing previous knowledge from their history classes as well as doing research in class. Students will read their novels and access research the time period.
