My Students

Recognizing that reading is connected to writing can be hard to do. My students could grasp this connection with a little help from you!

My students are in grades three, four, and five.

They differ in age, interest, ability, and personality. In our school, students rotate through 3 main classrooms: reading, writing, and math classrooms. I am the writing and social studies teacher. My students tend to enjoy writing narrative essays more than expository essays.

My Project

As a writing team, my coworkers and I are beginning a challenge for our students next school year to improve students' enjoyment in writing expository essays. Each student will sign a contract to promise to always read as a writer. They will promise to find the writing structures we use in class in the stories, magazines, and other reading materials that they choose to read. With the weekly Time For Kids, our students would be able to pull out expository writing pieces, and dissect them using the skills we teach in writing class. Students would begin to see the connection between what they read and what we ask them to write. My students would also be able to use Time For Kids to make real world connections to what's happening now in our world. In our social studies class, students could make the connections and then infuse writing by creating timelines, brochures, and powerpoints about what they have read in the Time For Kids articles.

With your help, we could inspire my students to fuse their writing and reading knowledge together.

We could motivate my students to understand and enjoy expository writing through viewing interesting expository text in the Time For Kids articles. Both third and fourth graders will benefit greatly from your assistance.
