Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My paraprofessional and I laugh every day. We have a very busy, fun-loving group of kiddos this year that are eager to come to school, despite the many challenges they face. One of which is growing up in a low income/high poverty city. Many of our little ones have had traumatic experiences we couldn't imagine going through. Our school has a great behavior management system to provide consistency and clear expectations, but we continue to find ourselves battling those outside influences that we can't "rescue" them from. It is very hard not to think and worry about our little ones all the time.
My paraprofessional and I have implemented a classroom community from Day 1 where we have committed to "Work Hard & Be Kind".
Together, with the students, we have created a safe environment where they are able to learn, grow, play, solve problems, and make mistakes together. Most of them are also comfortable enough to come to us with their feelings and worries so we are able to help them deal with those challenges outside the classroom as well. We would like them to think of themselves as our future and not a statistic.
My Project
Reading and writing go hand in hand and are the foundation of early learning. They are life skills that work together to improve the ability to learn. The read to self phones will help our young learners accelerate their fluency and finish the year strong. They will also support our future scholars in learning to read and enhancing their speech by listening to themselves speak in a fun way.
We teach our scholars "If you can think it, you can say it; If you can say it, you can write it; If you can write it, you can read it; and so can others".
Writing has been considered reading "inside out." Dry erase is one of the most effective, cost-efficient, and environmentally safe ways to learn how to write. The students are easily able to erase their mistakes and keep trying. The class set of dry erase materials would help make it possible for large and small group lessons, as well as give each student responsibility for their own materials.
