Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Kindergarten can be such a magical time. It is often where students learn to read, write, count, and so much more. A kindergarten teacher can instill an early enthusiasm for learning that stays with the student beyond the classroom. A kindergarten teacher gets to witness children blossom into well-rounded students ready to learn.
I feel so fortunate that I get to teach a group of kindergarten students with exceptional needs and promote their academic, physical, and social development.
My students may have more challenges to overcome, but they work hard every day and amaze me with their perseverance and desire to learn. Even when things are difficult, they possess a willingness to try as well as a devotion to learning. I discovered this early on as a kindergarten teacher when I watched my students' delight as the seeds they planted sprouted into plants. Or their attention as I read them stories. Or their intense concentration as they practiced writing their names in salt. Teaching kindergarten is truly rewarding.
My Project
Writing instruction can be very daunting, especially in kindergarten where students enter the school year with varying levels of ability. It involves more than making pretty letters on paper. It is complex. It involves language development, fine motor skills, knowledge of letters and sounds, and so much more. So many skills need to come together to make writing successful. However, despite the challenges inherent in teaching young children how to write, it is crucial.
Reading and writing really set the stage for life long learning and this teaching whiteboard will help me do just that.
It will allow me to to teach smaller groups of students so that I can better target specific skills and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of my students. I teach kindergarten and I love the fact this whiteboard is more at the eye level of young students and that it enables students to gather close to the board. I believe that this set up will increase student engagement and will support me in facilitating a more interactive writing experience, which would provide a unique opportunity to help children see the relationship between reading and writing.
