This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every morning my students walk in with a bounce in their step and a smile on their face. They are eager to learn and are excited about what we will do that day! What you wouldn't realize, is that I teach at a Title I school in North Carolina where 100% of the students receive free lunch. Many of my students face difficulties and hardships at home. Life isn't always easy for them, but they come to me each day eager to learn!

My Project

Reading fluently is only half the battle. To become proficient learners, my students must also be able to understand and explain what they're reading. My goal in providing them the Reading Comprehension and Writing Skill Activity Boxes is to help them build their comprehension and writing skills.

Learning has evolved from paper and pencil practice to high engagement, hands-on, learning opportunities.

As a teacher of high poverty students, hands-on learning is key to their success. These boxes will provide them with just that. My kids will be broken into small groups to practice the skills they need to grow in order to reach proficiency and beyond.

In the Writing Activity box, they'll practice sentence structure, write about a day in the life of a community helper and respond to real world situations. The Reading Comprehension box will help them identify cause and effect relationships, make inferences and use context clues while reading in a fun way. I am confident my students will gain proficiency with the help of these activity boxes.
