My students need a subscription to Scholastic News and an iPad in order to enhance the students' media literacy skills and to broadcast a monthly news program.
A day in my classroom is a day filled with learning, respect, and hard work. My school is in a rural area, and the students that I teach come from a wide variety of backgrounds.
Our class motto is, "In this room, we don't do easy.
We make easy happen through hard work and learning!"
I have high expectations for my students and do everything in my ability to help them achieve their goals! I enjoy planning creative lessons and projects as much as my students enjoy working on them!
My Project
My students enjoy watching each other and sharing reports using videos. They also enjoy sharing these videos with students in other grades and our parents through the use of the internet. The students' excitement is at a high due to their ability to create and explore in this way. I want to take their simple one subject reports to a new level. I would like to increase my students' media literacy skills by exposing them to multiple news stories and by engaging them in the production of their own news program.
We would like to use the Scholastic News Magazines and iPad to both research news articles and create our own news program to share throughout our building!
We currently have a webpage located within our school's homepage that allows students to create video book reports that are shared with other students in the school. The students completed a series of news reports that aired during our school-wide elections on Election Day this past year. The students have also completed video reports on various landmarks in Washington, D.C. This grant would enable us to expand into a more monthly "news" type of program instead of simply writing reports on given subjects.
This project will add another iPad to our classroom so that students are not waiting to use one to do a report. I would like to get enough iPads so that students may work in groups of three or in pairs. It will also allow the students to study news articles written for their age group and study what the news looks like when it is reported in a written format.
