I am a math inclusion teacher in a rural high school. The school has over 1,000 students that range from 9th to 12th graders in courses from Algebra I up to Advanced Mathematical Decision Making. The math inclusion class setting allows students who need extra support, in math, to receive the services without having to be pulled out of the classroom. Current district data indicates that students entering into the 9th-grade struggle with mathematical problem-solving. As a new teacher, my goal is to increase student achievement in the math department.
Reading fluency and comprehension are areas where most of our students struggle. These skills are traditionally taught and practiced in the literature classrooms. I want to cross the disciplines and brings reading novels in math class.
What better way to do this than by reading books related to math.
By doing this, students get the chance to break up the norm of math class and practice their reading fluency. Secrets, Lies, and Algebra are on our list of math-related fiction books I want to incorporate into my classroom.
The students are not going to get better with other subject leaving all the work on the literature teacher. I believe that standing together as a whole can have a positive impact on our student overall well being.
