Reading Aloud: Giving the Gift of the Joy of Reading

My Project

My students come from homes with little to no literacy exposure or books in their homes. Being new to school as Kindergarteners, my goal is to expose my students to as many different books and genres as I can to create a love of reading at an early age. I have created a specific time slot in my day to just read to them as they sit and listen. This has become our favorite part of the day because it allows them to use their imaginations and get immersed in stories.

"Reading aloud with children is known to be the single most important activity for building the knowledge and skills they will eventually require for learning to read." (Marilyn Jager Adams) Our read aloud time not only helps to share the joy of reading but also helps develop my students' listening skills, expands their vocabulary, and creates opportunities for conversations.

With these books, I will be able to expand my read aloud library and introduce my students to new authors and book series. These books will allow them to hear new stories, meet new characters, learn about their feelings, and hopefully get excited to read these books on their own one day! These new books will create excitement for our daily read aloud time! I am excited for the bonding time I will have with my students during our special reading time!
