Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The pandemic has created a new type of learner in the classroom. The change in the dynamics of virtual and face-to-face classroom instruction has made it more important than ever to engage the students and expand the learning experiences. The students at my school will need to see a visit to the library as an opportunity to not only explore books on the shelves, but to connect learning to the real world through visual and interactive opportunities.

My goal is to have my students fall in love with the library and it's imperative that they fall equally in love with learning at the same time.

Setting the stage for the environment, the mood, and the learning takes time and creativity. Luckily the students at my school seem like they just can't get enough of our library time together and leave wanting more. It is a huge goal for me that each lesson or experience in the library is purposeful and never a wasted trip.

My Project

Students will be challenged individually, as a class, and as a grade level each time they come to the library, to read books about all 50 of the United States. The materials needed will be the visual marker as the students make progress toward their individual and collective goals. Students are not always excited to read nonfiction books about our country. Hopefully, this challenge will change that and expand their knowledge of this great land we call home.

A large tapestry of a map of the United States of America will be a constant reminder of their reading goal across all 50 states.

Students, classes, and grade levels will be assigned colored pins that will hang in each state that they successfully finish reading the corresponding book. They will also be able to track themselves and their classmates on a magnetic board with their names and individual goals.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
