My students need 13 books with titles from "Tar Beach" to "Storm in the Night" and 16 subscriptions to Time for Kids" that reflect their diverse community and open up their learning to the greater world community.

My school is very diverse with many different cultures, races, and languages. The school is located in a large, urban community that is one of the most violent communities in the country. My classroom is a special education day class for 16 third and fourth graders with speech and language disabilities. It is the type of classroom and school that I hope to teach in for many more years.

My students face a variety of challenges; their learning disability, racism, low socioeconomic status, and violence in the community. However, the school provides a safe learning community. My classroom has the possibility to be an overall, enriching learning environment. Unfortunately, the school is unable to provide materials outside of the core curriculum.

My students would love to read books that show pictures and stories about their cultures and history. They have also shown much interest in continents and other countries. I am requesting a variety of age appropriate reading materials that show diversity and history. I am requesting books that can be used for all 16 students this year plus future classrooms. The books include a series about heroes, Native Americans, and African Americans. Three books include a CD to practice listening skills and fluency. The CDs and books are about Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, and Ben Franklin. A set of books about continents of the world and the United States are also great to expose all 16 students to history and map skills. A class set for Time for Kids magazine can bring the world to the students since many of them have never been outside the city.

Donors can make a difference for my students. Donors can bring excitement into the students' learning and open new doors to the world community around them. You can help the students realize the opportunities they have for the future through their new knowledge of the United States and the world.
