Reading About Science In The News

My students need 35 subscriptions to Science World magazine which will enable my students to learn more about Earth science and improve their reading skills.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Critchley's classroom raised $496

My Students

I teach Earth Science to energetic and hard working freshmen. My students must pass my class to graduate so I want to make my class as interesting as possible. They will be competing with all other high school students to get into college. A strong science foundation begins with the freshman year.

Reading is fundamental and yet teaching reading skills is still necessary in our high schools.

This classroom subscription to Science World Magazine will enable me to include the literary component to my class while still maintaining high interest with my students and staying on the curriculum topic. Often students do not believe Earth science topics occur in the news except for weather and a natural disaster. Here they will be able to read about current Earth science topics which are news worthy and written with the interests of high school students in mind.

My Project

An article about a new topic the class will cover can easily be assigned after they finish a test or lab activity--no wasted time. The magazine can easily be sent home to help an ill student stay caught up with the class or to be used as a supplement for a home-bound student who is struggling with a concept. Logical thinking activities are included in each issue which adds to the fun. Each issue has amazing visuals, a career page and free Internet activities. The classroom subscription includes lesson plans and worksheets to help access what my students are reading. Reading skills help with all tests and college preparation.

Reading is a skill which needs to be improved by all high school students.

I want my Earth science students to have the opportunity to work on improving their reading skills while learning more about our Earth. Thank you for considering my proposal.
