My students love to learn new things especially when it helps them better understand how the world works. This year for Earth Day, I'm hoping to engage my student's curiosity about the world and help them focus in on ecosystems. Here in Tennessee, we have several ecosystems that are of interest. Grasslands are especially exciting to learn about, as well as, forests and wetlands. My students would love to learn more about these and other ecosystems in the book series Bullfrog Books: Ecosystems.
We can learn more during an Earth Day lesson about the relationships of plants and animals in ecosystems, and how humans impact the environment.
My students learn about ecosystems in a library lesson in 4th grade as it pertains to how humans impact the environment. However, not all my students can read grade level books. This collection of ecosystem books is written at a lower level to permit all students to access this information. I'm specifically thinking of the access my English language learners, students that are growing as readers, and special education students will have as we add this collection to our school library. I also have a Kindergarten student who would be especially excited to see this series added to our library. This student read the "Wetlands" book and can't wait to learn more about other ecosystems. Please help us learn more about ecosystems. After all, Earth Day was created to better understand the human impact and relationship to our planet. Learning about an ecosystem is a great way to deepen those conversations about human impact on the Earth and hopefully inspire some future environmentalists.
