There are so many things I LOVE about this kit and the many ways I am able to use it in my classroom. It has been a powerful tool for supporting STEM because it combines hands-on building with coding and problem-solving in an engaging, age-appropriate way. Students use colorful LEGO pieces, motors, and sensors to design and build interactive models, then bring them to life through simple programming, which introduces key concepts in engineering, computer science, and mathematics. All of the grade levels I work with have been able to complete guided challenges and open-ended projects where they have learned to develop critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration skills while exploring real-world STEM applications. Students debated about which cryptid would win in a head to head battle using previous knowledge and the images I provided. We talked about how important it is to have a source to support claims. We looked at a published book on animal symbiosis that was vetted by experts that had \"facts\" that were easily proven false when deeper research was conducted to investigate and confirm animal relationships. Researching crytpids proved very helpful. All facts had to have a source as the very nature of cryptids are completely sourced from unreliable and unverified claims. \r\n\r\nThen, students were given time to research using books and approved databases to gather cryptid \"facts.\" I have two classes at a time. It was a showdown of red class versus blue class. Which class would have better facts to defend if big foot or yeti would win in a head to head confrontation? In one class, the student that had a bigfoot fact forgot to record the source information. The yeti geography fact won because sources were essential to defending any claims. After each class battled 3 pairs of cryptids, students had mini fact battles with their table partners. At one table, Chupacabra facts were pitted against the Kraken. The Kraken facts proved superior as the student who recorded Chupacabra facts did not include facts about eating habits. \r\n\r\nThis lesson taught students a valuable lesson. First, knowing source material and researching deeply is essential. Second, students need to evaluate which facts are most important to record and share with classmates. Our cryptid books have stayed checked out since this research unit ended. Thank you for inspiring my students. Bonus- I learned the best facts gathered were from students using books rather than databases. In the future, I will be adding more books on topics students will research during library classes. My goal is to increase student participation and engagement with research skills. Clearly, having more books on a topic is going to help my students become better at research and is the best path forward.","fullyFundedDate":1765725491680,"projectUrl":"project/creepy-cryptids-battle-head-to-head-in-b/9818007/","projectTitle":"Creepy Cryptids Battle Head to Head in Books","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Stansbury","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8181884_orig.jpg?crop=1030,1030,x1370,y120&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1716655693117","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/stansbury"},{"teacherId":8181884,"projectId":9549884,"letterContent":"My students love to earn special rewards. I have been giving out the googley eyed pompom for students that go above and beyond working with classmates. Teamwork can be a challenge especially when reading is involved and one student takes more time than a peer might take. When I see students using their heart and reading skills to help each other cross a finish line, then I love to reward them both. I gave another student an I Love Reading bracelet for sharing about a reading series they enjoy with the class. One class was very engaged in a World War II reading quiz. Every student received a reading tracker book mark to celebrate their reading chops at completing a reading quiz challenge and doing it with enthusiasm. Thank you for giving me reading rewards to encourage and motivate students with reading tasks and reading progress throughout the school year. \r\n\r\nAll students during library time have access to appropriate content and grade level reading levels that will grow their reading skills at each student's pace, but giving access to more challenging books to 1 or 2 students during a library class is challenging in terms of classroom management and serving the whole room's needs. The green lanyards are a big hit among my younger students who are ready for challenging content. The lanyard is a green light to additional areas of the library during morning open access checkout. I have a regular crew that shows up wearing their green lanyard in the mornings. Having access to more books means the world to them. I appreciate the student is reading books they enjoy and find appropriately challenging. I am especially grateful that students that need to be practicing reading at their level aren't being held back. I'm able to give these friends one on one time to help ensure the book they select is a good fit for their maturity level in addition to reading level. I prefer to give access to additional books whenever it is needed- the lanyards are giving us that freedom. Students were inspired to create from the books and also made independent creations. My favorite creation was the Star Wars ship from picture #3. The students worked hard to make the fighter match the picture from the book. Another group showed me the pictures and designs in their book and exclaimed 'how pretty the designs were.' One student really wanted to make the hot dog car, but his table mates wanted to make the blue hot rod car. Clearly, we have a winner of a new book series and winning activity that should be repeated as a reward day in the near future. One thing I know about this generation is that they need to grow interests outside of those from technology. I am so grateful I could grow their imagination this week. Now they have a new collection of Lego how to books to read. Finally, they may become inspired to become engineers, artists, or just to grow their skills in a hobby. We had three first grade classes come visit. Each student was paired with two or three fourth grade students. Before our first grade friends arrived, I taught our fourth graders how to read to a younger student. We discussed reading a story book with emotion, dramatic pauses, and pausing to let first grade students read aloud high frequency words they might know. I also made sure to point out that first graders sometimes were strong readers and might enjoy reading aloud to the fourth grade students. Each group read 2 - 4 stories each. \r\n\r\nThe first grade students loved reading aloud to their fourth grade buddies.
