Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classes this year are small, self-contained English I (freshman) classes made up of students with mild/moderate learning disabilities. One of the greatest struggles I have is getting students to read. Most of my students read at a 2nd - 4th-grade level. Independent reading is difficult, especially as many of the texts at their independent level are aimed at students much younger. This year I am making a conscious effort to improve my classroom library to have high-interest books that will encourage them to pick up and browse through the books and want to read them.

I started by asking students what THEY WANTED.

Then, I chose several of those books and ordered them. When the books arrived the students were thrilled. One young man said, "Wow, a teacher that actually does what she said." Once they finish, I want them to choose more another and keep reading.

My focus is the classroom library because I can showcase new books as they arrive and the choices are not nearly as overwhelming as the school library. My students often feel lost and don't know where to start in the larger library.

My Project

My ninth-grade students have struggled with reading most of their lives. My aim is to provide enough reading material in a small environment that encourages them to WANT to pick up a book, find out what it is about, and read it. Students are able to borrow these books to take home (which is often helpful when they are out sick or quarantined). They are also encouraged to write reviews that would encourage other students to want to read them. Several of these titles are ones requested by students, by authors we have read other works in class, sequels to something we have read, or books I have heard other students recommend.
