My Project

Help us provide contemporary, relevant, diverse, and popular books for our students! Currently, our Media Center is behind even "At Risk" according to South Carolina Standards for school libraries. The average age of books should be within 10 years, so 2012. Our average age of resources is currently at 2007, 5 years behind where we should be, with many titles going back to 1994! 46% of our books here are considered "Aged". According to minimum standards, we should have at least 11 books per student. However, we are at only 8 items per student. As I work on weeding, which is a process where we take books out of the collection that are no longer relevant, haven't been checked out in years, are in damaged beyond repair condition, or are so outdated as to be obsolete, our collection continues to fall further and further behind, only perpetuating the problem. With the current budget provided by our school, we simply do not have enough funds to make a dent in replacing even the books we weed, let alone growing our collection to just meet State Standards.

To inspire, create, and then maintain interest in reading, we must have a library that has books of interest to our students!

36% of our collection so far is fiction; we should, instead, have this at about 65% of our whole collection. With non-fiction books dating back to 1998, it is clear that our resources in our library are not adequate to meet the needs of our student body to create life long, successful, learners and leaders!
