Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are in a self-contained, high school special education class located in an impoverished section of the South Bronx, New York. Our class contains 12 students, all of which have varying learning abilities and educational needs. Meeting these needs through traditional instructional methods presents a significant challenge. Despite their obstacles, my students' drive and passion to learn and grow are truly inspiring. It is this inspiration that motivates me on a daily basis to give everything I have to continue developing and preparing them for the world ahead.

Because the class has a wide range of academic skills and abilities (specifically their reading levels), I must provide individualized, differentiated instruction in order to successfully meet their educational needs and position them for postsecondary success.

Technology has the ability to play a crucial role in helping students with learning disabilities achieve their academic goals.

Having the appropriate technology in our classroom for students to integrate wonderful online resources such as Newsela, Raz-Kids, and IXL Learning into their daily literacy instruction would undoubtedly improve their reading fluency and comprehension levels through differentiated instructional activities. Improved reading abilities will enhance postsecondary college and career opportunities for many students who would otherwise fall victim to a system that doesn't adequately address their needs.

This project will drive my students' determination to become better readers because of the engaging nature of the online resources. Additionally, this project will allow my students to engage in research projects and writing assignments that address social-emotional learning, teamwork, and real-life problem-solving skills; essential skills for an increasingly competitive workforce.
