Readers, Readers, Everywhere!

My students need books that they are able to read at their own just-right level.

This project expired on November 6, 2018.

My Students

My students can be reluctant readers. They often start school excited to learn and eager to be read to. My daily read aloud time is sometimes their favorite part of the day. However, when beginning the process of learning to read on their own, they can be a little hesitant. I want to change that!

I am a first grade teacher, in an urban setting, with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and academic backgrounds.

Many of my students are English Second Language learners that are learning English vocabulary, as well as, children from low socio-economic backgrounds. Often my students do not have access to books at home and do not read outside of the classroom. Therefore, they are often below grade level, with little to no sight word knowledge, or vocabulary/comprehension skills.

As a first grade teacher, I know that reading is EVERYTHING! Seeing my students begin to grow in reading is absolutely amazing! Their faces brighten and they begin to believe that they can do it themselves. I always want them to believe in themselves! I want them to love reading as much as I do and to continue to learn and grow as independent readers!

My Project

The ability to read is essential. You must be able to read on a daily basis. Whether it be at school, work, shopping at the store or for leisure. The hopes for each student in my class are to encourage independent fluent reading with understanding and for the children to develop a love of learning through reading.

The donations to this project will help to improve my students' independent reading fluency, increase their vocabulary, as well as, help grow their love of reading!

I will use the book bins and carts to organize each set of leveled reading books and label them appropriately. It will help the students know where their "just-right" book levels are and also give them a reading goal to move to higher leveled books.

My students will love reading the new selections and I hope to continue adding to each bin throughout the year. I would also like to add a reading bench to my book area and hope to create a relaxing reading nook for my students. Thank you for your consideration.
