Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you know what it is like to struggle with reading? Have you ever felt a sense of dread come over you when you are asked to read out loud? Have you ever wished that you could read and comprehend a book at your grade level? The students I teach know these feelings all to well!
My students are great!
I work at a Title One school where the percentage of students who receive free or reduced lunch is close to 90%. Although my students face challenges as a result of low SES, they are polite, respectful, and eager to learn. I teach students with special needs. The majority of the students I teach have a specific learning disability which makes reading very difficult for them. My students range in reading levels from second to fifth grade. Overall, they struggle with decoding, fluency, and comprehension.
My Project
I have selected a variety of reading resources that will benefit my students regardless of the level they are currently reading at. As we know, everything is more fun when we make it into a game. Therefore, I have selected a variety of reading games that will target reading skills such as main idea, making inferences, and vocabulary. In addition, I have selected games that target early reading skills such as short and long vowel sounds, blending sounds to create words, and using digraphs.
I have also selected reading comprehension skill cards that students can complete within a small group or individually. It is my goal to boost my students comprehension skills with high-interest lessons that turn struggling readers into confident readers! These lessons will focus on making inferences, main idea, compare and contrasting, and other reading skills. I have also selected a reading fluency activity for my students which will allow them to improve reading fluency.
For the majority of my students, reading is their least favorite subject because it is the subject they struggle with the most.
As we all know and can remember from our time in school, reading is a vital part in any educational success story. Without the skills of decoding and comprehension, all other academic areas will suffer. My students need to develop a love for reading and if you support my project, you will be enabling their success in school for not only reading but all subjects.
