My students are a group of curious learners at many different levels of developments. These students are a very diverse group that come from many different backgrounds and experiences. They love to laugh, sit together reading books and math in our classroom, and help each other in every area. They love to steal books off the shelf and sometimes, they even put them back in the right place! They like to participate and our engaged when they get excited about learning.
Some of my students are hesitant in their learning and they need appropriate materials at their level in order to feel successful.
They become motivated when provided with encouragement and concrete feedback about their progress.
My students enjoy working together to meet their goals. We measure our reading stamina (how long we are reading independently) everyday and we celebrate when we pass new milestones. We also have a flexible classroom where students are starting to make their own learning choices, such as where they sit or what they will write about that day.
My Project
We are building a reading workshop in our 1st grade classroom and I need leveled books to support my students reading development. My current library of leveled readers is terribly insufficient to support the volume of reading students need to do. My students currently only have access to a few books at a time and need to share with others at their same level. In order to make them want to do the hard work of learning to read, they need books that interest them and that are at their independent reading level. I've worked hard to get donations of books but they tend to be on the higher level. My readers who are struggling the most need access to books at their level.
My emergent and beginning readers need accessible texts in order to progress in their reading development.
These just-right texts are necessary to get my students reading independently so that I can work daily with my students one-on-one and in small groups. With these books, students will start to see their reading ability grow and they will be more motivated to continue to work on improving their reading skills.
These high quality, high interest, non-fiction and fiction texts will excite and inspire my students. I've selected books primarily for independent reading but also for guided reading. With these books, I can push my students into higher levels, building their decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills while building their confidence at the same time.
